Kellogg Camp Winner Press Release
Added 7/17
9-year-old wins the contest with his Team Rocket costume, and a list of all Kellogg's Pokémon products.
Kellogg's Ultimate Pokemon Camp Awards Red Carpet Experience to Premiere Of New Pokemon Movie
NEW YORK, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Poke-mania levels surged again today when 500 children vied for a child's ultimate fantasy -- a trip to the premiere of the new Pokemon movie in July.
Nine-year-old Justin Pierre Edmund from Queens, N.Y., brought Poke-mania to life by dressing in a red and black costume as Team Rocket, the "bad guys" of the Pokemon world who steal rare Pokemon. He and other children competed in a costume contest sponsored by Kellogg's® Ultimate Pokemon Camp at Chelsea Piers in New York City. Justin -- a self-confessed Pokemon fanatic who has more than 1,500 trading cards -- and his mother will travel to Los Angeles for the July 15 premiere of "Pokemon The Movie 2000."
Planning his costume for weeks and staying up until 3:30 a.m. to put it together paid off for Justin, who brushed aside his mother's gentle suggestion not to get his hopes up too high.
"Think positive," he told his mom.
Kellogg's Ultimate Pokemon Camp and the release of new Pokemon premiums and games give more fuel to a trend that just keeps going. Ending May 27, 2000, for the 41st week in a row, Pokemon was the most popular word searched on Lycos -- outdoing Brittany Spears and Dragonball, which placed second and third respectively, and N' Sync, which made it back to the top 10, up from 12 the previous week. In addition, U.S. sales of licensed Pokemon products will approach $3 billion in 2000.
With sales of nearly $7 billion, Kellogg Co. is the world's leading producer of ready-to-eat cereal and a leading producer of convenience foods, including toaster pastries, cereal bars, frozen waffles, and veggie foods. The company's brands include Kellogg's Special K®, Rice Krispies, Eggo, Pop-Tarts, Nutri-Grain, and Morningstar Farms®. Kellogg icons, such as Tony the Tiger® and Snap! (R) Crackle! (R) Pop!® are among the most recognized characters in advertising. Kellogg products are manufactured in 20 countries and marketed in more than 160 countries around the world. The Pokemon phenomenon began in America in September 1998 with the release of the original Red and Blue Game Boy games and debut of the animated television series. In the United States to date, Nintendo has sold more than 17.3 million Pokemon-related video games. Leisure Concepts Inc., a division of 4Kids Entertainment Inc., is Nintendo of America's exclusive licensing agent for Pokemon in all territories, excluding Asia. In 2000, Nintendo projects the Pokemon franchise total retail revenues will exceed $3 billion in the United States alone. Pokemon launched in Europe in October 1999 and has truly become a worldwide cultural and retail phenomenon.
