We are sorry, but we've had a change of plans. We may NOT be able to sell Beanies until April or later. We have been much too busy, but I can't say sorry enough times.

The other day, when I was in the city of L.A. selling Beanies, I got a strange encounter.

A young girl who was poor and looked about 10 or so asked, "Have you got any horses or cats?" She said it so politely, I was almost shocked. She spoke quietly and slowly, with a slight British accent.

I smiled and nodded. "Here they are," I said pushing the basket closer to her. As she rifled through
them, she said, "I think I'll take this one." and stopped, holding up Derby WITHOUT THE STAR.

Normally, this particular Beanie would have cost hundrends upon hundreds or even more, but my heart broke for the poor little girl, standing shivering on the sidewalk. "You can have her for free!" I exclaimed cheerfully, smiling broadly and nodding. The girl frowned slightly.

"But you need money," she protested, shoving a couple of crumpled dollar bills towards me. She dropped them in my lap, replied, "Thank you so much" and trotted away, holding Derby against her chest under her coat, head low against the biting wind.

I don't think I ever saw the girl again in Los Angeles, but just yesterday I was walking through Huntington Beach and saw a huge crowd. I pushed my way through and gasped.

The girl was lying, motionless, on the sidewalk, obviously gone. She held a hand beneath her coat, and I gently pulled it out.

There was a crumpled note that was addressed to: "The Beanie Lady." I coldn't read the writing, but I knew there was something else under her coat. Derby.

It was sad, really. The girl never got a chance for anything, I guess.
