Space












This site is ment to inform u about what happened in 1980-1989 however there will be a few articles that deal with the early 90's as well. I hope you find any information that you need and if you need more i will be posting the sites where I received my information. Thank you and welcome to my website.




NASA ~ The Space Shuttle Columbia -- On April 12,1981 the space shuttle Columbia was the first to orbit the Earth. When it came back to Earth, it was looked over and seven months later in November the Columbia was launched again being the first reused space shuttle. The Challenger Disaster -- The Challenger was the second reusable shuttle made by NASA. It flew nine successful missions. However number ten had a horrible fate. The suttle was to carry Sharon Christa McAuliffe, she was to be the first teacher in space. Also aboard the shuttle was the Comander Francis R. Scobee, the piolet Micheal J. Smith, the mission specialist Ronald E. McNair, Ellison S. Onizvka, Judith A. Resnik, and Gregory B. Jarvis. The shuttle was having problems from the day it was supposed to lbe launched, on January 22,1986. There was so many problems that the flight had to be delayed till January 28th at 11:38am. 23 seconds into the mission, the Challenger blew up. All of the crew members on board died. Sally Ride -- Dr. Sally Ride was born in 1951 in Los Angeles. She went to Standford and got her bachelors degree of science in Physics and received a bachelor of Art degree in English. In 1983 she was the first american woman in space, she was aboard the Challenger. She went on a second mission on the Challenger in 1984. She trained for a third mission on the Challenger, but didn't get to go because it blew up in 1986.




REAGAN~ "Star Wars"-- The fear of nuclear weapons was great. Reagan knew that if a nuclear war happened that the U.S. would be unable to defend itself. So he proposed the strategic defense initiative which was to develope a weapon that could destroy incoming missiles before reaching the target. Iran-Cantra Affair-- Members of Reagans administration were selling weapons to Iran in order to have them release American hostages that were being held in the middle-east.




FOREIGN AFFAIRS~ Somalia-- in the 1980s somalia stopped the ties between it and russsia and allowed the U.S. to keep troops in the area. Somalia was also being terrorized by a man named Barr, who was not very liked. when he was kicked out of power in 1991 the U.S. and other countries joined to keep peace in the area. Berlin Wall-- the Berlin wall was to seperate the western from eastern germany in the cold war. then in 1984 it was takendown being the last symbol to the end of the coldwar. Rwanda-- in the early 90's the Hutu tribe started a mass genocide, killing the Tutsis who were the power by the departed belgian colonistis. A man who was a Hutu and owned a hotel was married to a Tutsis and sheconvinced him to help save other Tutsis from being killed by keeping them in the hotel. Persian Gulf--Iraq's leader Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait to get the oil. so the United nations went to help kick saddam Hussein out of Kuwait and out of power in Iraq.(which they succeeded to do) Tiananmen Square-- china was still a communist country , even though the other surrounding counties were not anymore. When a group of people tried to protest they were arrested and many were sentanced to death. Panama Canal-- President Bush gave the contol of the Panama canal to Panama and then Panamas Dictator mauel noriegn stopped cooperating with bush and even was helping drug traffickers. american troops invaded panama and got Noriegn out of there and helped the people of panama establisha new Goverment.




PEOPLE~ Sandra Day O'Connor-- on july 7th, 1981 Sandra Day O'Connor was nominated for the U.S. supreme court. She was the first women in the supreme court. she was nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Princess-- in 1981 at buckingham palace in london, England, Prince Charles had a royal wedding. He married a kindergarten teacher whos name was Diana Spencer. And she then became Princess Diana. Clinton-- clinton's impeachment started with Paula Jones accusing him of sexual harassment when he was governor. She said he invited her to a hotel and then came onto her. Through that investigation they discovered that he cheated on his wife with Monica Lewinsky. Most people and not so much with the fact that he cheated on his wife.in the end he was not impeached and he finished out his term in office. Rodney King-- Rodney King was a victim of police Violence. By Officer Theodore J. Briseno and three other officers. briseno and two of the other officers had been charged before with filing false reports like this. They said they had pulled king over for speeding and they said the started beating because they felt King was reaching for a weapon. However many witnesses say that they did not see kind reach for anything. Springsteen-- Bruce springsteen achieved sucess in the1970s as well as in the 80s. His biggest smash hit was in 84 with the album "born in the U.S.A.". he had two singles that came off of this record. one single was "Born in the U.S.A." and the other one was "Glory Days".




THE "IN" STUFF~Music-- The Reaganomics was a popular band of the 80s. They were dedicated to bringing back the feelings that defined the musicof the decade. they wer part of the new wave rock, the modernized version of the 70's disco. Hair Styles-- in the early 80s it was the tallest straight angled hair. Then went to strange cuts and colors. From there it moved on to the movre hair you had the cooler you were. Straight hair was out and you could have short hair but it either had to be up, bleached, a funky color or spiked with gel of mousse. Looks-- Leg warmers were the ultimate fashion item along with head bands. they came in al designs and colors. also cats eye mirror glassesand fluoro suits.(Bright suits were the best.) Sports-- in 1981 all major league baseball teams went on a strike not playing for two months.Flo Jo in 84 qualified for the Olympics and won the silver medal in the 200-meter dash. Then in 88 she shattered the U.S. and world records in the olympics. she was concidered the "fastest woman alive" . In 1987 and 1988 Michael Jordan was the leader of the NBA basket scoring. Pong-- it launched the video game craze. it was just a ball that went back and forth over the net. and two people would move the paddles on the screen to hit the ball to the opposite side.




ACRONYM TABLE~Yuppies- young urban professionals, Yummies-young urban mothers, Dinkies- double income no kids, Sinkies- single income no kids, Minkies- middle income no kids, Poupie-porsche owning urban professionals, Swell- single women earning lots of loot, Guppies- greenpeace yuppies, Bobos- burnt out but opulent, Woopies- well off older people, Jollies- jet setting oldsters with lots of loot, Glams- greying leisured affluent middle aged, Deccies- D.I.Y. decorators who drag stripple and marble, Splappies- Stripped pine laura ashley people, Drabbies- ethnic urban quaker with anti and pro views, Dockney- east docklands london yuppie, Tweenie- between 5 and 12 years old, Ladettes-young women who act like loutish lads, Gery Panthers- senior citizens with opinions, Empty Nesters- couples whos children are grown up and away.




OTHER~ Oklahoma City--9:03 in Oklahoma City on April 19 1995 the worst terrorist attack on U.S Soil happened. 168 people were killed when a bombwent off. Timothy McVeigh was pulled over for driving wthout a license plate. he was then recognized as a possible bombing suspect. AIDS-AIDS was discoverd in the 80s due to the rare reoccurances of pneumonia and other diseases in a short period. when AIDS was first discovered it was most common among gay men. NAFTA-- it is a trade orginization between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. It shot the U.S. export rates up and lower the U.S Televanglists-- the name for eangelical ministers who use television to reach a large nation wide audience. Information revolution-- computers were making it and easier to find information that people needed to know
