ABC's of Safety and First Aid

It is always best to prevent accidents before they happen.
Knowing the basics of first aid and emergency care will allow
you to respond to an emergency effectively until you can
secure professional medical help. You need to know
commonsense approached to family safety and several tips
for responding quickly to routine medical problem.

You should always call 911 or your local emergency hot line
in a suspected crisis. When you do, speak clearly and calmly
and give as much information about the incident as possible.
Be sure to provide correct name and address and clear
directions to where you are.

Your Personal Safety
More than 4 million serious accidents occur eacy year in
homes.Here are some things you can do right now to keep
your home safe.

  • Make sure your family knows how to get out of the building
    safely in case of fire. Advise children that they should never go
    back into a burning building to save pets or possessions.

  • Make sure that you have an agreed upon meeting place in the
    case of a fire or other emergency so that all family members are
    accounted for. Set a specific family member of friend to call in the
    event of an emergency so that each member knows who to call
    in the event you are seperated from each other.

  • Maintain workable fire extinguishers in kitchen, workroom,
    and near stariways, and teach family members how to use them.

  • Install smoke detectors at least one per floor. Use fire
    ladders in upper stories for quick escape.

  • Never block fire escape exits. Make sure cars and other
    items do not block emergency vehicles entrance to your home.

  • Use flame-resistant material for clothing and curtains,
    particularly for children's sleepwear, clothing, cloth dolls
    and toys.

  • Never smoke in bed or when sleepy.

  • Place screens in front of working fireplanes and have
    chimneys and flues inspected and cleaned regularly and
    never leave a fire unattended. Teach children not to play
    with matches of fire of any kind.

  • Keep portable heaters away from flammable upholstery
    and never leave them unattended.

  • Don't overload electric outlets. Have an electrician check
    the wiring regularly for fraying or wear. Avoid use of extension
    cords. Maintain adequae fuses or circuit breakers.
