HISTORY OF THE DERRINGER:
In 1826 Henry Deringer, a Philadelphian, created and introduced the "Derringer" handgun. In 1870 Colt patented a new version boasting of a swingout barrel for quick and easier loading. Today, more than a century later this palm sized firearm is pried by gun collectors all over the world.
The legendary derringer handgun was instrumental in shaping American history. It was popular among southern gentlemen as it could be easily concealed in one's pocket. After the Civil War, the derringer found it's way westward. Dance hall ladies particularly enjoyed a greater sense of confidence and security with a derringer in their purse or concealed perhaps, behind a ruffled garter.........or tucked elsewhere. To professional gentlemen of all trades the pistol represented a kind of vest-pocket insurance. While a six gun strapped to the hip often inspired an honest deal, a derringer up one's sleeve was like being dealt an ace-in-the-hole. |
