| Description |
Even if the lion is considered as king of the beasts, it is not the largest of the big cats. The tiger is the largest feline on earth. The average weight for males is 400-600 pounds, while females are 160-370 pounds. The length of the Bengal tigers skull is 329-378 mm for males and 275-311 mm for females. The total length of the body is 2700-3100 mm for males and 2400-2650 mm for females.
Bengal tigers come in remarkable colour variants such as white with black stripes and blue eyes; black with dark brown stripes so the stripes are barely visible and the most common– a reddish orange background with brown, black or gray stripes. The stripes are generally vertical but in rare cases there are horizontal stripes.
White tigers showing no stripes have been recorded. A wholly white tiger with the stripe-pattern visible only under reflected light, like the pattern of a tabby cat was recorded in the early 19th century.
